Obituary for George I. Turley Jr.

OAKVILLE – George I. Turley, Jr., 79, passed away on March 2, 2023 at Trinity Terraces Nursing Home. He was the beloved husband of Joann Turley for 55 years.

Born on April 2, 1943 in Waterbury, Conn., he was the son of the late George I. Turley Sr. and Alice (Pasquariello) Turley.

George was raised in Naugatuck where he attended local schools. He went on to attend college at UCONN, Central Connecticut State University and finished his advanced studies at St. Joseph’s College. He was a basketball manager in the 60’s for UCONN and Coach Shabel as well as a member of the Delta Chi fraternity.

Growing up, George enjoyed swimming with his father at the Naugatuck YMCA. Years later he was the coach for the West Side Swim team and led them to a winning season. George was a devoted teacher for the Waterbury School System – East Side, for 30 years, retiring in 2002.

He loved to fish and hunt with his buddies and his dad. Over the years, George enjoyed many trips with Football Fantasy of Watertown as well as playing pinochle and poker with the guys and Maine fishing trips with the guys.

In addition to his wife, Joann of Oakville, George is survived by his daughter, Christina Sutherland and her husband, Jason, of Vernon; his granddaughter, Megan Sutherland, of Vernon, who he loved with all his heart; his sister, Dee Rado and her husband, Charles of Waterbury; his brother, Joseph Turley of Mansfield, TX; his two nephews, Troy and Michael Turley of TX; and many dear nieces, nephews, godchildren, friends and wonderful neighbors. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister-in-law, Ann Marie Turley.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to his aide, Anna LaMountain.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, March 11, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary Magdalen Church, 145 Buckingham Street, Oakville. Burial will follow in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. There are no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers and to honor George’s memory, donations are requested to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
