Obituary

Naugatuck, CT
Margaret Swan, 102, formerly of Naugatuck and the widow of Howard Swan, died peacefully April 23, 2020 at the Lutheran Home of Southbury.

Margaret was born on September 29, 1917 in New Haven, CT, daughter of the late Gennaro and Antoinette (Diglio) Mongillo and had lived in Naugatuck for most of her life. She was a parishioner of St. Francis of Assisi Church and had worked in the cafeteria at Western School. Her husband always thought of her as the salt of the earth, with a few sprinkles of pepper for spice. Margaret was a dedicated wife and mother whose Italian cooking was renowned. Her home was always welcoming and tidy with delicious aromas wafting from the kitchen. She was also a gifted seamstress. The center of her world was her family, whom she served with devotion and loved dearly.

Margaret is survived by her five children, Frederick Swan, Sharon Schildgen and her husband Dr. Frank Schildgen, Robert Swan and his wife Denise Swan, Joseph Swan and his wife Carmela Swan, Mary Brickley and her husband Arthur Brickley, her sister, Lucy Esposito, nine grandchildren: Tracie Oliveri, Peter Swan, Charlie Swan, Amy Sobek, Taylor Schildgen, Frank Schildgen, John Brickley, Kevin Brickley and Michael Brickley, 21 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and her parents, Margaret was predeceased by her siblings, Theresa Horton, Margaret Raccio, Betty Kotrady, Susie Del Buono, Clement Mongillo and George Mongillo, her granddaughter, Stephanie Best; her great granddaughter, Sandra Sobek and her daughter-in-law, Susan Swan.

All services will be private and a Memorial Mass will be announced at a later date. There are no calling hours and arrangements have been entrusted to the Buckmiller Thurston Mengacci Funeral Home, 82 Fairview Avenue, Naugatuck. In lieu of flowers and to honor Margaret’s memory, donations can be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
