Balbina Fernandes Nunes
Loving Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother

Naugatuck, CT Balbina Fernandes Nunes, Loving Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother, was reunited in heaven with her beloved husband Antonio on Sunday April 19, 2020 at St. Mary's Hospital

"Bina" as she was known to everyone was born October 24, 1930 in Monte Murtosa Portugal, she was the daughter of the late Artur and Domingas Fernandes.

She came to this country in 1952 with her husband Antonio and lived in Naugatuck all these years raising her three sons and being active in many things especially her beloved Our Lady of Fatima Church. She was instrumental in helping raise funds to build the church to better serve the Naugatuck and Waterbury Portuguese communities. The church was finally built in 1971. She also was part of a group that started a "Portuguese Folkloric" dance group with the children of the church, that many of the members to this day still remember so fondly. The group traveled to many states to perform. One of the most memorable was at the World’s Fair in New York in 1965. She was a member of the "Senoras do Rosario" at our Lady of Fatima Church and also a member of the Ladies of Auxiliary at the Naugatuck Portuguese Club.

“Bina” also enjoyed singing and dancing and being the life of the party at both the church and club functions. Wherever she was, there was always a good time had by all. She was well known for her wit and sense of humor which will be missed but never forgotten. She will also always be remembered for her strong singing voice in church every Sunday morning.

Balbina is survived by her three sons, Arthur & Leonor, Antonio & Antonia, Joe and Manuela. Also her grandchildren, Justin & Liz, Stacey & Jason, Christina & Jon, Caitlyn & David, Felisha & Bobby. Also her great grandchildren Alyson and Ashley. She will also be missed by her many nieces and nephews who all loved their Ti Bina.

Balbina was predeceased by her husband Antonio, her sister Maria Tavares, and her brothers Jacinto, Manuel, and Jose Fernandes.

We would also like to thank her caregivers Debbie, Elsa, Helena, Marcelina and Victoria who took such good care of her these last 3 1/2 years. We will never forget how much help you were to her and us.

All services will be private and a Memorial Mass will be announced at a later date. There are no calling hours and arrangements have been entrusted to the Buckmiller Thurston Mengacci Funeral Home, 82 Fairview Avenue, Naugatuck. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in memory of Balbina Nunes to Our Lady of Fatima Church, 2071 Baldwin Street, Waterbury, CT. 06706.
