BEACON FALLS- Gerald Lawrence Engel, known to his friends and family as Jerry, 76, husband of Doris S. Engel, passed away at Waterbury Hospital with his loving family by his side.

Jerry was born in Cleveland, Ohio on July 5, 1942, son of the late Alvin R. and Martha (Chamberlin) Engel. Jerry attended and graduated from Hampden-Sydney College, Louisiana State University and Penn State University, where he earned his doctorate degree in education. He was retired, having been a Computer Science Professor at the University of Connecticut for over 30 years and previously having taught at numerous universities and institutions across the country. Throughout his long career, he was actively involved in many professional organizations including IEEE, ACM, CSAB and ABET and was a past president of the Computer Society. Jerry had a fond love for traveling and was able to travel with his family all over the world. He enjoyed visiting National Parks and discovering local restaurants and amusement parks in the places he visited. He also spent many years officiating soccer and softball throughout Connecticut.

Jerry is survived by his wife Doris of 54 years, his daughter, Samantha Engel, his son Shannon Engel, a grandson, Jack, and a niece, Mary Ann Engel. In addition to his parents, Gerald now goes to join his brother, Alvin R. Engel, Jr.

There are no calling hours planned and all services are private. The family wishes to thank the caregivers and staff at the Village at East Farms and Visiting Angels for the care they have provided to Jerry over the past year. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Buckmiller Thurston Mengacci Funeral Home,82 Fairview Ave, Naugatuck. Donations in Jerry’s memory can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
