John J. Wawer, Jr.

Waterbury – John J. Wawer Jr., 93, of Waterbury, passed away on Friday, March 27, 2015 at St. Mary’s Hospital after a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Marion (Fallon) Wawer. Mr. Wawer was born on January 23, 1922, in Willimantic, son of the late John J. and Katherine (Koumiodua) Wawer. He was the youngest of 6 sisters and brothers.

John proudly served his country in World War II, with the U.S. Army, 1007th Engineer Service Battalion, TEC 5, in the India-Burma and Central Burma Campaigns. He was awarded two Bronze Service Stars. After the war, John returned to Waterbury to marry his sweetheart Marion. They were married for 50 years. John worked at Uniroyal - Naugatuck Chemical for 37 years as a chemical operator. Prior to the war, he worked at Colt Firearms in Hartford.

John loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, playing games, sports or sharing stories. He enjoyed horse racing, cigars, and ginger brandy. Growing up, he liked to hunt, fish and play baseball.

Mr. Wawer is survived by his children, David and his wife Pattie of Enfield, Michael of Arizona, Kristine Barker and her husband John of New Hampshire, and Mark and his wife Beverly of Litchfield. His cherished grandchildren are Katrina, Kellie, Kenny, Karen, Tiffany, Brian, Meghan, Kate, John, and Nathan, as well as nine great-grandchildren.

The family wishes to thank the entire staff at The Village at East Farms and Dr. Jega for their compassionate care given to John. A memorial celebration for Mr. Wawer will be held on Saturday, April 18,2015 from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at the Buckmiller Thurston Mengacci Funeral Home, 82 Fairview Avenue, Naugatuck. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family.
